Tutorial 1:28 XMODS Generation 1 Range Repair Kit Installation

This Tutorial will step you through the very simple process of replacing the inductors on your XMOD receiver board. Poor range (about 6 feet or so) is generally a sign of fried inductors. This happens when the antenna or the antenna wire touches something energized, such as the battery ends, a loose wire or even the motor case. You can sometimes (but not always) see a small crack in the inductor, with white substance showing, if it is fried.

If you have fried inductors, this procedure will restore your XMOD's range back to factory performance, but will not make it longer. There is more info in the XMOD Gen1 Q&A on range problems.

Required Items

  1. Solder 0.032

  2. Soldering Iron

  3. Soldering Braid

  4. Side Cut Nippers

  5. XMOD Gen1 Range Repair Kit

  6. XMOD Gen1 with fried receiver inductors

Step 1

Our replacement inductors are an exact replacement in size and value for the originals.

Step 2

Use your Soldering Braid and iron to remove the solder holding the factory inductors in place, and remove them with a pair of hemostats or small pliers.

Step 3

You will need to clean the holes out completely with your Soldering Braid so you can insert the new leads through the board. If you cannot get all of the solder out, sometimes you have to use a small drill. It is best not to drill the board since the top and bottom are connected through sleeves in between them, and drilling removes, this requiring the top and bottom to be soldered.

Step 4

There is no polarity, but you do need to get them in the correct locations as shown here.

Step 5

Bend the leads out to hold the inductors in place and make soldering easier.

Step 6

Solder the leads from the bottom. If you did not drill the board you only need to solder the bottom. If you did, solder both top and bottom.

Step 7

Clip the long leads off with your Side Cut Nippers.

Step 8

This is what it should look like when you are done. Since we are using the exact value and tolerance, no further adjustment should be required.

Notes

This will restore your range back to factory performance, but will not make it longer. If you still have poor range, you may have a damaged receiver board and if so the only remedy is to purchase another Receiver or Electronics Package.
